Why Is a Member Online but Not Showing a Location?
Category: Troubleshooting
Platforms: All
In cMe, online status, battery level, and location data are not the same thing. A member may have recently synced their online time or battery level with the server without having uploaded a displayable location.
Common Causes
- The member turned off global location sharing.
- The member turned off location sharing in the current group.
- The member's phone hasn't obtained a valid GPS location.
- The member is indoors, underground, on a weak network, or has low battery.
- Background location is restricted by the system.
- A privacy address or group privacy rules are affecting the precise location display.
- The member just joined the group and hasn't generated a new valid location yet.
If a member shows as online, it usually means that account or device has synced recently; if no location is shown, it means there's currently no recent location that meets the display criteria.
Tip
Online doesn't mean continuously uploading GPS. cMe reduces unnecessary location and network use based on movement state, permissions, and the system environment.
